What makes a good folding mobility scooter?

Almost every folding scooter looks similar in a photograph. The differences that matter show up on the third or fourth outing, when the novelty has worn off and the scooter has to fit into ordinary life. Six things decide whether that happens.

• Weight. This is the single most important number, because it decides who can load the scooter. A scooter that only one strong person can lift is a scooter that stays in the garage on the days that person is not there. Look at the weight with the battery fitted, not just the frame weight, and check whether the battery lifts out separately.
• The fold mechanism. A good fold is one movement or two, done standing up, without kneeling on a car park surface. Our eFOLDi models use a two-step fold that most people manage in well under a minute after a single demonstration.
• Range. Be honest about the trips you actually make. A shorter range covers a shopping centre, a market and a walk along the foreshore with room to spare, while the eFOLDi Explorer's 22km range suits full days out or a rider who charges less often. Ask us what a given model will do on your usual outing.
• Battery type. Lithium-ion batteries are lighter, charge faster and are the only realistic option if you plan to fly. Check that the battery is airline approved and that a second battery is available if you want one.
• Boot fit. Folded dimensions matter more than folded weight in a small hatchback. Measure the width of your boot opening, not just the boot itself.
• Ground clearance and tyres. Solid puncture proof tyres remove maintenance and roadside worry. Gentle gutters, sloped driveways and grassy verges are where a cheap scooter grounds out.

How much do folding mobility scooters weigh?

Most folding scooters on the Australian market sit between 11kg and 30kg. That is a very wide band, and the top of it is heavier than it sounds once you are bent over a boot lip. The models we carry sit at the light end. The eFOLDi Compass is just 11kg. The eFOLDi Lite is 14kg, or 16kg including the battery. The eFOLDi Explorer is 17kg excluding its battery.

Why does that band matter so much? Because it is roughly the weight of a full carry-on suitcase, and a carer loading a scooter twice a day is repeating that lift at an awkward angle over a boot sill. It is the repetition and the awkward position that wear people down, not the single lift. A scooter where the battery lifts out first turns one heavy lift into two manageable ones, which is why we point that out on every demonstration.

Can you take a folding mobility scooter on a plane?

In most cases yes, and this is one of the main reasons people choose a folding model over a standard scooter. Australian airlines carry mobility scooters as assistive equipment, usually at no charge, but the lithium battery is what decides whether your particular scooter can fly. Airlines apply watt-hour limits to lithium batteries and normally require the battery to travel in the cabin with its terminals protected, while the folded scooter travels in the hold.

Several models in our range are well suited to flying. The eFOLDi Compass is airline approved and travel friendly, and the eFOLDi Explorer has an airline compliant battery. In practice you will need to tell the airline at least 48 hours before departure, give them the battery details and the folded dimensions, and arrive a little earlier than usual so the check-in team can label the scooter properly. Rules differ between carriers and change from time to time, so always confirm directly with your airline before you book. Cruise lines are generally easier again, and most will simply ask for the folded dimensions.

Will it fit in my car boot?

This is the question we are asked most often, and it is a fair one, because a folding scooter that does not fit your car is simply a heavy scooter. Rather than send you out with a tape measure, we will measure the folded scooter against your own car at the free in-home demonstration, so you can see it go in and come out again before you decide anything.

Three tips before you measure. First, measure the opening rather than the cavity, because many hatchbacks have a boot that is wider inside than the gap you have to pass the scooter through. Second, check the height of the boot lip, since a high lip turns a comfortable lift into an awkward one. Third, think about what else travels with you, because a folded scooter plus a walker plus luggage is a different problem from a scooter alone.

You do not have to work this out on paper. At a free in-home demonstration we fold the scooter and load it into your own car before you make any decision. If it does not fit, we would much rather find that out in your driveway than after a delivery.

Three wheels or four?

Three-wheel folding scooters have a single front wheel, which gives a noticeably tighter turning circle. They suit riders who spend most of their time indoors or in shopping centres, cafes and narrow aisles, and they usually feel more nimble around furniture at home.

Four-wheel folding scooters spread the load across a wider front axle. That means more confidence on footpaths that camber towards the gutter, on gravel car parks and on grass at a park or a bowls club. If most of your riding is outdoors, or if balance or confidence is a concern, four wheels is usually the kinder choice. If you are mostly indoors and space is tight, three wheels will be easier to live with. Trying both side by side settles it in about ten minutes.
